To like the person & value the relationship with them/see a future together are 2 different things. We may like anyone as a person, but not as a potential partner I am afraid so. How he deals with rejection also defines his learning mindset & kindness/compassion. I hope that doesn't feel so bad he lost a wrong one who wasn't sure about him at the moment. We do want a nice guy, but just because he's nice doesn't mean we're compatible. I think the fact that your friend got friendzoned means she didn't see it on a romantic level, but like him enough to keep in touch.
