I have quite a few friends of the opposite sex and it is strictly that: friendship. I love all of them platonically of course but I have never been in a relationship with any one of them. It is entirely possible and quite common for people of opposite genders to be friends. But to ask 'is it wrong?' There are multiple ways to answer this and really it is dependent on your experience and whether or not you believe opposing genders can actually develop a kinship that in no way ties into romance or otherwise. But even then, what you experience isn't the same for every person. (edited)

People tend to want to relate to others, which means that there is usually a correlation between one's gender and the gender of one's friends--but some people definitely don't follow that path, and may relate more closely to the opposite gender, or find their company more welcoming.
