Commentary of Mark
Following instructions without fully understanding them can be difficult and sometimes even scary. Especially when those instructions have potential to make you look foolish. That’s probably exactly what Jesus’ disciples were thinking as they carried out Jesus’ instructions to retrieve a stranger’s colt. Imagine what the conversation between those two disciples was like on their way to the village where this colt would supposedly be. I can imagine them talking about their feelings. Perhaps they felt embarrassed, thinking the other disciples were making fun of them as they set out on this strange mission. Maybe they talked about their fear of someone asking them what they were doing. It’s possible they even felt shame, as they imagined the owner of the colt accusing them of thievery. One thing they knew – it was always best to follow Jesus’ instructions. And so, they went. Feelings are good. They are guides that help us recognize our own orientation to events happening around us. But feelings aren’t Lord. Jesus is Lord. And when we are called by our Lord to do something, our best answer is to obey. Who knows… our obedience to even the strangest call from God may result in others recognizing Him as the King of the Universe.
