I've noticed at my local board game shop that some folks prefer info dumping the rules and others take things turn by turn. Sometimes it's a bummer to spend thirty minutes at the beginning of a new game just learning rules, but I don't see a better way! It's rougher still when we only play that game once before trying something new, so it just feels like a big time tax sometimes. What's worked for you and why?

I prefer hearing the rules first. I may not fully understand them, but when I get into the game, I can start making connection to the actions I can make and what was explained in the beginning.

For me it mainly depends on the game and the depth I am expected to play the game with others. Similar to chess. If I am playing against a novice or someone who doesn’t know the all of the rules I let them cheat or come up with things that make sense. If it’s someone who is a grandmaster, than I am studying the rules of the game to make certain I ain’t the one cheating. Just go by play pattern I argue and make certain you know how it ends. If you want to know more or make new rules go right ahead, as long as everyone is having fun. (edited)

I genuinely prefer to see some video that explains the basics so I can see it and if they have some sort of like turn order card that helps out to guide you through that's awesome! You'll probably miss some like rulings or something like that, but at least you'll be playing without spending an hour learning before you play. Then the next the you can take what you know and add what you didn't

Kickstart about maybe a year ago. But the most unique looking game I played. Very faithful to the game, while still being fun. Don't be fooled, its really easy to play, just pick an action and do it! Fun up to 4 players, just kinda of a slogan to set up 😅
