In 2021, I went to Japan to study for a one-year master's degree, and I thought that sharing my experience here could give many people an idea of what it’s like and how you can do it too, scholarship included. In 2020, I traveled to Japan for the first time on a university work trip, purely out of curiosity. And well... what can I say, I was fascinated. Tokyo is a city of pure concrete, yet it’s so orderly and clean, full of things to do. Everything works, every train arrives on time, the food is exquisite, and if you get tired of the capital, there are always wonderful places you can visit in under an hour by train. The beaches and temples of Kamakura, or if you want to go further, there’s Nikko to the north or Mount Fuji itself, both amazing spots. I've always said that going to Japan is something everyone should do at least once in their life, and I could have been satisfied with that trip and left it at that, but NO! I decided I wanted to go there to experience the real Japan. To stay and immerse myself in the true Japan for a while. Not be in a rush to see everything in a short time, but instead, to space it out and travel around Japan over the course of a year. Since I wanted to go, why not take the opportunity to do something useful while I'm at it? Like studying for a master’s degree. So, I started researching and found a university that fit what I was looking for: the International University of Japan, or IUJ, in Niigata Prefecture. There were several study options: MBA, Digital Transformation, International Relations, PhDs... and they offered full and partial scholarships. Plus, the programs were in English. It sounded great. And applying didn’t cost much, around €40, so I thought I’d give it a shot and see what they offered me. But frankly, I didn’t think I had much of a chance. It was just one of many applications I had sent to master’s programs at other universities, not only in Japan, and IUJ was one of the cheapest. Surprisingly, I passed the first screening, and they had me take an English test and a basic math exam. Still in disbelief, I kept going through the process, and they interviewed me. And a week after the interview... they accepted me! In the last application round (out of three). It’s said that the earlier you apply, the better chances you have for a good scholarship, but despite being in the last round, they gave me a 70% scholarship! What I want to say is that it sounds very idealistic and beautiful, but it's not as complicated as it seems! And if you apply early, you can even get a full scholarship with stipend. It’s not out of reach for anyone. The only requirement this university has is that you need to have graduated from university (any degree) and have a good level of English. I’ve found this by far the easiest way to go live in Japan for a reasonable amount of time without spending a fortune on Japanese language classes. Plus, you can earn a master’s or PhD in your field of choice! So, I went. And I warn you, it’s not the experience everyone imagines of Japan: concrete and neon lights? No way. Rice fields, mountains, and lots of snow. A rural and very wild Japan. The university is an hour and 40 minutes from Tokyo, so if I felt like it, I could always escape to Tokyo for the weekend. All in all… it’s a unique experience. I’ll be giving a short online talk on the 28th, where I’ll go into more detail about my experience and the university itself. If you’re interested, drop me a comment here or DM me! The picture is of me and my colleagues at our graduation! (edited)

After a night of work, I’ll spend the last four days either doing some shopping (pasabuy) and enjoying the cold weather 🥶

I think this is a mini bon odori. Bon Odori is a traditional Japanese dance for honoring ancestors and is dancing in a round

Went to ashikaga a couple weeks ago. It was one of the most beautiful flower parks I've been to in Japan. I was blown away every turn. What are your favorite flower gardens in Japan?

House of Blues this last week. Also saw the shows in Des Moines and Madison. My yearly vacation. Thought about going to Disneyland next door but decided it wasn't worth the price and I didn't really have the want. Not big on theme parks. The bars at the gardenwalk that HOB is part of are...
