First messages are just a way of saying "Hey look at me for a moment!" then they do and if they want to talk to you they will, if they don't they won't. Don't put too much worry into it, the vast majority of people won't like you and won't reply, this just means you are an interesting and unusual personality, and that maybe you need the help of a dating app. If you can win over every person you meet then you won't be here, nor would they :)

I usually single out some familiar or interesting piece of info in their bio and ask questions about it or share mine. Ofc... this hinges on there being anything to latch onto to begin with, which hinges on people caring enough to actually flesh out their profile 😅
