Political alignment matters a lot, and there definitely is a line for me. For me, politics is kind of fundamental - it's a reflection of values and worldview. If someone has dramatically different political perspectives from myself that is going to be a serious point of friction. Why would I bother trying to make a relationship with them work? Also, I think the people who position themselves as having a centrist/apolitical position are among the worst offenders. This sort of position reveals that you either come from a position of privilege, fear conflict, or lack empathy/perspective. (or all of the above) One thing which I think people seem to forget is that everything is 'political', and the moment you take something for granted is the same moment you'll find it taken away. The right to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" is political, so unless you don't mind giving up these rights, you are political, and politics are important to you. That said, when it comes to friendships, I have no issue being friends with someone who holds different views from my own. I may share ideas or debate them from time to time, but that shouldn't be an issue. (edited)

I think both should at least respect each other’s beliefs and be able (and willing) to discuss things. I was more pro-choice and was once with someone who was pro-life. It got us to both seriously evaluate our stance on the issue and where we draw the line on our stances. It can be eye opening to have a conversation with someone who sees things differently. Personally I don’t affiliate with any party, and being with someone who does isn’t a deal breaker. It’s when they’re completely close minded on the matter that it’s tiring.

The line wouldn't be political as much as close minded. No matter what side they're on, if I can't reason with them, sometimes even to the point of showing them a video and them twisting logic so their worldview still works or just ignoring it, then talking to them is a waste of time.
