saw a brief review on this book by the Strugatsky brothers. predecessor of S.T.A.L.K.E.R games, the 2018 sci-fi horror hit Annihilation casting Oscar Isaac & Natalie Portman, and the book it's adapted from. (and a recently released video game Pacific Drive) big deal. so the idea is that, the title is basically an analogy. saying these so called "anomalous zones", left behind by extraterrestrial visits are like garbage discarded by ppl after a picnic, terrorizing the fauna inhabiting the land. humans are so insignificant in these scenarios, we would think there has to be more of a reason for aliens to come to us, an egotistical human centric view, but in reality they didn't even pick us up on their radar, came and went zooming off to somewhere on the "space road". I thought, damn, that was depressingly scary bc how accurate it is. like how we would totally justify interpretations that are much more respectable and flattering to human vanity. book is wonderful in its own right. go check it out before I spoil anything more.
