Here is a red Hamiltonichthys sp. fish tooth I found. This tooth is very small, but rare and 306 million years old. It is a deep red due to being replaced by iron. The vein like structures are actually ridges on the tooth to functionally help crush shelled organisms. I included a diagram of the... read more

Here is my 300 million year old fish tooth, Campodus sp. They would be shell crusher fish, specialized in eating invertebrates.

Found this large Ameura missouriensis Trilobite and Amphiscapha gastropod housed in a nice chunk of limestone a year ago. There are also algal fossils called Osagia that have coated some of the smaller broken shell bits. They are seen as round spheres in the rock. You can see some in the glabella... read more

A theropod trackway at Vale de Meios, Portugal. I'm standing far up above the trackway on a higher rock bed, so those are much larger than they appear there. (edited)

From the Devonian to the Carboniferous, tetrapods (aka animals with four limbs and a spine) saw extreme diversification, with their first major adaptation being proper lungs, though they still needed the water to reproduce. The first amphibians developed from animals akin to Ichthyostega,... read more

We’re sticking to the Cretaceous period for our fossil today, though it might be more accurate to say fossils, as we’re covering a whole family for our topic today. Found in Myanmar, France, and Alberta, Canada, meet the Haidomyrmecinae, the Hell Ants! These fun little critters are some of the... (edited) read more

Amphibians got the short end of the stick in my opinion, at least when it comes to which animals are the most adaptable to their environments. They rely on water to keep themselves from drying out, but rely on air to breathe, and have slow metabolisms when compared to more active animals. They had... read more
