It was one of those evenings when the sun, clearly tired of dealing with the day’s nonsense, was finally clocking out to meet its partner. (What they talk about at the end of the day, I’ll never know. Who am I to judge celestial relationships, anyway?) There I was, on my trusty super-fast bike, the wind messing up my hair like an overenthusiastic toddler (ACTIVA). The road stretched ahead, flanked by green patches that weren’t quite a forest but gave off that “I’m definitely wilder than your backyard” vibe. Honestly, I had no particular place to go. It was one of those rare times when you step outside just for the sake of it—like a kid who's just mastered riding a bicycle. No need to focus on the pedaling anymore; it’s all about the adventure now, finding the roads no one’s discovered, and maybe hitting a few potholes along the way. So, I’m cruising along, feeling like the master of my little world, when I spot a herd of buffaloes on my left, about 20 to 30 meters away. They’re just casually strolling through the fields, living their best life. “Where are they off to?” I wondered. There wasn’t a village nearby, and yet here they were, confidently walking under an old, unused bridge, like they knew a secret shortcut to somewhere magical. The bridge itself was a relic—probably built by some government official who thought, “Let’s put a bridge here, just for kicks.” Of course, it hadn’t been used in decades, except now by these buffaloes, who had clearly cracked the code of government infrastructure better than I ever could. As I tried to make sense of this bizarre scene, a wave of envy hit me. These buffaloes had the kind of freedom I desperately wanted in my life. They didn’t have deadlines, worries, or any stress about “finding themselves.” They were just...being. It dawned on me that while I had stepped out for some solitude, some freedom from my thoughts, I wasn’t even close to what these majestic creatures were experiencing. They had it all figured out. Me? I couldn’t even figure out if I wanted chai or coffee most days. But then, as my mind wandered deeper into buffalo philosophy, reality smacked me in the face. “They wouldn’t even accept me into their herd,” I thought. I mean, come on, I don’t even know what buffaloes talk about. What if they thought I was too high-maintenance? And God forbid, if someone asked me to bring milk at night, where would I even get it from? My milkman only delivers in the morning. I’d be exiled before I even made my case. Still, despite the absurdity of it all, there was beauty in that moment. I realized I didn’t need to join a buffalo herd to feel free (though it would’ve been cool). It was enough to ride aimlessly, to step out into the world without purpose, and to laugh at the ridiculousness of my thoughts. Maybe freedom isn't about escaping everything but about finding joy in the little things, even if those things involve a bunch of buffaloes under a random bridge. (edited)
