Experience machine, do you connect?
This is a philosophical thought experiment that is also relevant for psychology, as it explores human motivation. This is an iteration of the original by Robert Nozick: You get the opportunity to be connected to a machine that simulates paradise. The experience is like a vivid dream, in which you only experience positive experience, and never negative experience. You succeed in all your goals, all food you eat is delicious, everybody loves and respects you, etc. . The machine makes it so that the experiences are always novel, pleasurable, and engaging, so that boredom is an impossibility. But there is a catch! You forget the real world, and that you entered the machine, and you will never be disconnected. You get this one opportunity to connect, do you do it?

I would instantly do this. The only people taking harm of it are people surrounding me and that isn’t my interest anymore, if I‘m connected to that machine. Being eternal happy is the ultimate goal of humanity, since we don’t really have any real meaning of life. Eternal bliss isn’t possible in the real world, so why not fake a better one.
