Stanning an underplayed iconic trans punk/folk artist and activist
So American singer songwriter Laura Jane Grace of Against Me has been one of the best in the business for a long time. Hands down great writer, very smart lyrics and typically with a meaningful message. I'd consider her entire body of work as one of the most important from the last 20 or so years. In comparison it would be like how say a Bob Dylan often has his music held up as a major counter culture act first, political message disguised as a song really there aren't many othe modern artists that can stack up. Unfortunately as their band was gaining steam they were dropped from their major label deal shortly after she came out as in transition. (was announced in the early 2010s in Rolling Stone). So after a rather difficult period of time with both career and personal issues stacking up on them Im happy to say theyre finally seeming like they're in a super solid place. After some time away for m.h. and getting away from their deal with warner it seems like the music career is poised for a very strong push. While not my personal experience so can't say for certain Grace also writes a lot about their personal struggles with their dysphoria as well seems like it might resonate and be very cathartic fot someone in a similar positio.. I'm kind of surprised that she is often unknown among people I reccomebd her to and it does seem like their label deal gone bad really hurt their exposure So Grace latched onto punk music at a young age after being a weird poor dirty teenager who was basically doing nothing but being in the wrong place and catching the wrong officers attention was arrested, detained without full Miranda rights, and actually was tried as an adult. You can read more on it but since that happened theyve... been very much pushing against that kinda power abuse/ systems structured to keep people down. Grace is very Politically minded, outside of just songwriting too, regularly doing charity raising cash for lgbqt teen shelters and raising awareness and education , produced an Emmy nominated series interviewing 10 different Trans women and men to learn and share their stories as well as her own.
