The Last Fare: Part 2

Question

Alan couldn’t drive. His hands gripped the steering wheel, knuckles pale, but his legs felt like they’d been replaced with stone. The card sat in the passenger seat, mocking him, its black surface gleaming faintly in the glow of the dashboard lights.

“You were warned.”

Warned about what?

The rain pounded harder, drumming on the roof like an impatient knock. Alan swallowed the lump in his throat and reached for the card. His fingers trembled as he turned it over. The back was blank, smooth as glass.

He shoved it into his pocket, trying to dismiss the pit in his stomach. It was over, wasn’t it? The guy was gone, and Alan could just… drive home.

But the longer he sat there, the more wrong it felt.

The road ahead was still and lifeless, the headlights barely piercing the misty darkness. He checked the rearview mirror again—empty. Yet the air felt charged, like something was watching him just beyond the edges of sight.

The meter was still running, ticking away the seconds. Alan reached out to reset it, but his finger froze mid-air.

The screen flickered.

His heart skipped. The digital display blinked, numbers distorting, stretching. Then a new message scrolled across the screen:

“Keep driving.”

Alan recoiled, his breath catching in his throat. “What the hell…”

The message vanished, replaced by the usual fare count. Was it a glitch? A prank? He shook his head, gripping the wheel. No, he needed to leave. Now.

But when he shifted the cab into gear, the engine sputtered and died.

“No, no, no!” Alan muttered, twisting the key in desperation. The engine refused to turn over. The headlights dimmed, leaving him in near darkness.

Then he saw it.

Movement in the woods.

A figure—tall, lean, and impossibly fast—slipped between the trees, barely visible in the faint glow of the dying headlights. Alan’s chest tightened, his fingers gripping the wheel like a lifeline.

“Hey! Who’s there?” he shouted, his voice breaking the heavy silence.

No response.

The figure appeared again, closer this time. It wasn’t the man with the briefcase—this thing was different. Its outline was jagged, almost fractured, like it didn’t belong in this world.

Alan scrambled for his phone, fingers fumbling as he tried to dial 911. The screen blinked once and shut off, leaving him with nothing but the sound of his ragged breathing and the relentless rain.

The figure stepped into the road.

Alan froze. It wasn’t human, not entirely. Its limbs were too long, its head tilted unnaturally to one side. And its eyes—if you could call them that—burned like silver coals, reflecting the faint light like a predator’s.

It raised an arm, impossibly slow, and pointed at him.

The cab’s radio crackled to life. Static hissed, followed by a voice that sent a shiver down Alan’s spine.

“You didn’t listen.”

The voice wasn’t the man’s—it was layered, distorted, like multiple people speaking at once.

“What do you want from me?” Alan shouted, his voice cracking.

The figure didn’t move. The voice in the radio continued, cold and deliberate.

“Drive. Or the choice will be made for you.”

Alan’s heart pounded as the engine roared to life on its own. The headlights flared, illuminating the road ahead. His hands moved without thinking, shifting into gear as the cab lurched forward.

He glanced in the rearview mirror again.

The figure was gone.

But something else was there.

In the backseat, where the man had sat, the briefcase now rested, its black surface pristine and unmarked.

Alan’s stomach churned. He hadn’t seen the man leave it behind. Had it just… appeared?

The radio crackled again.

“You’ll deliver it. You have no other choice.”

Alan’s grip on the wheel tightened as tears blurred his vision. His mind raced, but there was no escape. He was trapped in this nightmare, driving toward a destination he couldn’t see.

As the cab picked up speed, the GPS flickered to life. The screen displayed an address he didn’t recognize, far beyond the outskirts of the city.

“This ends when you decide it does,” the voice hissed. “Or when you no longer can.”

Alan’s blood ran cold as he stared at the briefcase in the rearview mirror, his mind screaming with questions.

Who—or what—was pulling the strings? What was in the briefcase? And where the hell was he going?

The rain blurred the road ahead, but he didn’t dare stop. Not now.

Not when the real nightmare had just begun.
