Gay Frankenstein with plants! An interesting post-spooky season find. The plot goes thusly: "confirmed bachelors" taxidermist Simon and botanist Gregor cohabitate in a botanical garden following a fire that destroyed their home. One day, Gregor receives a mysterious package containing a fungus and orchid. The fungus and mushroom seem to be living in a rare mutualistic relationship with the mushroom extending mycelium to protect the orchid from receiving too much light. Ever the scientist, Gregor conceives the mad idea of implanting the seemingly motile fungus within an unusual pot, a cadaver. Is the creature sentient? Who was the"pot" used by Gregor? And how is she connected to the housekeeper? Overall, not a bad book. The relationship between Gregor and Simon was very realistic. While there were some tense moments, the book was not quite scary. The mystery of what happened with the "pot" was pretty obvious. I kept expecting some kind of twist with the housekeeper, but the resolution to that mystery was pretty satisfactory. The ending does take a bit of a dip with a seeming change in character to one of the leads. Not a terrible read.
