In one or two cases, when I tried to console people, they misinterpreted what I say, and it just backfired on me. So, I decided a long time ago not to engage with them during this time of hardship and just let them be. However, sometimes when that person themselves tries to talk to me, I feel obliged to reply with a relevant response as per my ideology. Then it gets misunderstood as if I'm trying to impose my ideology onto them, and I regret responding in the first place. (edited)

It doesn't have to be difficult. Tell them you're sorry for their loss. Ask them how they are doing. Listen. Ask if you can do anything for them. Your ideology should not enter the conversation unless the person asks about it.

How about just acknowledge their situation? And how difficult it must be. Express how you don't know how to make it better and have no experience similar to come from but that you are there for your friend if they need you. Sometimes you just need to sit in sadness with someone until it passes. No need to diminish their experience by pointing out how it could be worse or how it's fit the best. No need to push them into another emotion they're not feeling yet. Just be there. Accept them. I'm wondering how you responded and what your ideology is that it offended friends. Although just avoiding then during hard times signals you're not such a great friend at all.
