Sonic Animation

I find it interesting that Sega absolutely nailed the animation for the first 3 sonic games, however, it took Sonic Team nearly 20 years to get the same animation quality in their 3D titles. Comparing them to other 3D titles around the same release times, the 3D sonic games leave much to be desired. Seriously, their first major win in terms of animation was Shadow: The Hedgehog and they even outsourced all their cutscenes to a different company (who admittedly did a phenomenal job). I dont even have to tell you how many people hate that game though, but its animation was a step in the right direction. Half the problem was they mo-capped most of the 3D models starting around Sonic Adventure 1. This combined with the over the top cartoony and heavily stylized designs made them suffer with the "Mascot Suit" problem. Though I understand that they probably did it as a cost cutting measure over traditional animation methods. If you have an interest in animation, I would look into the history of animation in Sonic games. It's quite a ride.
