Immersion. I've tried duolingo, books, all that jazz. But I've learned that the most effective way is to familiarise yourself with the language. Listen to songs in that language, watch movies (with dual subtitles if possible - the language you want to learn, and English/Russian), listen to their radio stations, etc... When you were a baby, no one gave you a big book on how to learn russian. You were just surrounded by people who spoke it, and you eventually started picking things up. It's the same thing. Although patience is key here. I'm not saying that books or videos don't help, it's just that developing that familiarity is really important and quite rewarding. Everything else will just fall into place.

In my experience (as Dutchman just moved to Hungary), start off with becoming familiar with greetings/please/thank you/goodbye, be able to express your nationality to imply you don't know the language (yet, but want to learn), and be able to ask "what is this/that (called)". But thats only efficient when plenty native speakers of the language you want to learn are around. I use Duolingo as a supplement to practice sentence structure and pronunciation, every once in a while I use Google translate on the spot for something that is relevant in the moment. Often there are helpful people around to teach me a new word, by which the new word is easier to remember due to the pleasant experience :) I learn the language quicker when the words are relevant to my direct experience. Just sitting down with a dictionary wouldn't cut it, cuz I wouldn't be able to relate realistically.

Motivation

Mopeds in Vietnam
Just found out one of the slang terms for mopeds in Vietnam is "xe Γ΄m" which literally means (hug car) because you hug the driver as you ride and i just find that so adorable.
