Academy Awards Nominated Hollywood Films Review
Spoilers Ahead: 'The Brutalist' (2024/ English-Hebrew/ Apple TV), 'Anora' (2024/ English-Russian/ Rental on Zee5 and Prime) and 'A Complete Unknown' (2024/ English/ Apple TV):' The Brutalist' is truly a technical marvel where the cinematography was just amazing and the performance by Adrien Brody is riveting where he again plays a Jewish refugee finding his footing in life, just like he did 23 years ago in 'The Pianist'. Though it was less impactful than Ralph Fieness in 'Conclave'. Writer and Director Brady Crobet succeeds in delivering the film, which is engaging and also enlightens with lessons in architecture despite the final moments being underwhelming. Sadly, 'Anora' is so disappointing and I never found such explicitness in the film even in three random Tarantino or Scorsese films put together and in the 2011 film 'Shame'. I wonder why Mikey Madison won the Best Actress over the classic performances in 'The Substance' and 'Emilia Perez' (it had 13 nominations!). So much shouting, and so much overacting that if you see the film in mute, you will get most of its gist like a glove. Ironically, the Armenian goons who feature from the film's second half are the real heroes and had the film been shown from their perspective, it would have been darker but riveting enough. While the film's reputation has been saved for being put under the guise of 'independent cinema', the final result doesn't look worthy of being cherished in the longer run. 'A Complete Unknown' is certainly not expectedly impressive, but not bad either. Based on the five years journey of the legendary musician Bob Dylan, the film focuses on his rise, life and times as well as his socio-political inclination that also aided in shaping the global musical scenario. The film has its moments, and watch out for the musical 'Jugalbandi' moments that raise the bar. Ironically for a musical, it is gentle and focuses well on Bob Dylan completely despite giving out some unnecessary sub-plots. Timothee Chalamate is truly the real star of the film and his nomination for the Academy Award for the Best Actor is truly justified. Sadly, American Cinema is being more mediocre these days!
