Vopson's theory is flawed because information systems are human constructs and not a physical phenomenon. You could argue information is stored inside our sun, say the organisation of the entire star, right from the corona to the core, yet that organisation is something we do to understand more about our star. Humans are excellent at pattern recognition and approach life convergently. What if other life forms do so divergently? They're probably more evolved because they don't contradict the second law, not only a theory but a fundamental behaviour of our universe. We aren't living in a simulation, at least the one we interpret as.

i think it is highly likely, but signifigantly more complex than we can currently understand. even the concept of physical vs digital is a disservice; i believe it is probably an extremely sophisticated mix of both, in a way that science cannot explain currently and wont for a long long time. i love any speculations like this and im sure we will continue to see a lot more in our lifetimes.

While interesting, the argument Vopson makes for this is based on the "second law of infodynamics". Which Vopson and a colleague created.  Saying the jury is still out on this one would be giving their proposed new law too much credit.
