Loving Everyone You Meet

While I was in Syndney, I noticed a new woman in my meditation class. After my meditation class I talked to her and asked her what brought her to the class. She said she was looking for techniques that can help her deal with the grief of her brother dying. She said, "If you have a few minutes I'd love to tell you about my brother." So I said, "yeah sure." "He was a survivor from a concentration camp, after the second world war. We settled in Australia. He had PTSD. But they didn't know at the time. He had a lot of suffering. One day, decades ago, he decided 'I'm going to love everyone.' He just made a decision one day that he'd love everyone regardless, selflessly, unconditionally. His captives, his tormentors, people in the shops, people in the community. He just decided to love everyone. As he went through his life he never expected anything in return. But naturally people started to love him. At Christmas time people would run out their homes just to give him gifts. He was so admired." The best part of the story was that she said she went to his flat not hearing from him for some time. She had a key. She went inside and found him lying in bed. He was deceased. But he was smiling. Ear to ear. He had died smiling. If life is a transition from one life to another, I told her she doesn't have to grieve, wherever he is going he is very happy.
