How to improve self esteem?

Ok, so I have VERY low self esteem. Stuff happens in life, and some of that stuff creates some wounds that remain. It comes to the point where I basically depend on others to raise my self esteem, which as you can guess, just fails. So my question to you is, how can I improve my self esteem?
