Read what you love, not what you should

Question

In recent months I’ve tried to read alot of classic literature. It’s been a mixed bag for the most part; leading to the conclusion that I should probably just focus on reading what I enjoy, rather than trying to force myself down a certain path. It’s all subjective after all, and I wonder if things like 1001 books you should read would be better titled, 1001 books that are really good, and if some of them are your thing, you should read them. What do you all think?

I agree. Reading for pleasure is so much better than reading because of pressure or expectation.

I agree. I have experienced with some people who made their recommendations into a "should/must read" instead of "recommend to read." Well, i take recommendations but, somehow the "should/must read" makes me feel rushed and i have already expected i cant ever finish the book within my expected period 😬. Like, look, I have others books I WANT to read, LOL! 😂

I want to go back and read several books from school. I love to read, but I hated writing reports. Nothing quite like being told what I got from the story was wrong.

I ended up with such a loathing of reading assigned books that I want to read many again and see how I feel about them when I read them by my own choice.

This is really something I've been wondering about recently. I mostly read fiction and recently people have been suggesting me to read some classics and serious books, that I should read them to broaden my world view. I have been very reluctant in doing so, as I don't have too much time to read and currently invested in other stuff, but their logic is also valid on some aspects. Probably I will pick up some of those books sometime, and I feel there are good points both for and against this argument.

I love that Markus - that’s one of the biggest issues with education if you ask me - not enough focus on reading for pleasure - if they just worked on instilling that, the rest would fall into place I think
