this is just a classic freedom vs security debate. it really depends on how you want your government to operate. do you want your government to mediate its people with limited intervention, or protect its people with impunity. freedom of speech is something that already does not exist in this country. the facts are that words hurt, they disrupt the peace, and they destroy capital. we have laws to hold people accountable for all of these things, from cyberbullying laws, disorderly conduct laws, and defamation laws. the government can already persecute you for doing any one of these things if it chooses to. these are clear violations of freedom of speech, but when a child kills themselves, when a mob breaks out, or when an honest, hard working individual has their business destroyed by a smear campaign, these laws make a little bit of sense. that being said, maybe we shouldn't have those laws. maybe if freedom is what we set out to do, we should commit to that at all costs. what we need to ask ourselves is are we willing to champion the torch of freedom despite its consequences. that could be your child, that could be your business. i choose freedom of speech, simply because i don't expect anyone to come help me for anything, under any circumstances. but i understand that not everyone is built like me.
