Now as many are celebrating the victory of #kolkataknightriders over #sunrisershyderabad in the Finals of the #tataipl2024 , many are also attributing to the victory of #kolkatabiryani over #hyderabadibiryani.

This confrontation is indeed weird. As we go deeper into the pages of history, Kolkata's Biryani culture is attributed to the #nawab culture of #awadh (that's #lucknow , yeah the same which finished seventh in the final team tally this year).

The year was 1856 when the Awadh ruler Nawab Wajid Ali Shah was exiled from Lucknow to Kolkata on the pretext of bad governance by the #britisheastindiacompany He was confined to Fort St Williams, for his alleged role in the 1857 mutiny. After the mutiny was crushed, the Nawab was made to settle at the #metiabruz area in Southern Kolkata (flanking the Garden Reach area). Here, you can witness its marks at places like the Sibtainabad Imambara, Qazrul Boka Imambara, Shahi Masjid and even Alipore Zoo (on the opposite side of the #hooghly river). Among the prominent influences that continue to thrive and grow here are the Paan eating culture, poetry, #sherwani dress and even culinary. Here, the #biryani was introduced, and it was from there, that the preparation got a #bengali tinge that included the addition of Potato!

Whereas the Hyderabadi Biryani indeed has got influence, but it is that of 'foreign' and that's Persian. It is said that it was conceived during the reign of the Nizams in the late 18th century.
