Why is it the older sci-fi has more heart and storytelling? I mean maybe a part of it is leaning to heavy on special effects, but I don't think that's the entire story. Shouldn't new tech enhance what was already good?

Probably from cultural shift? The flashing lights dangling keys and whatnot takes up too much room for the storytelling. Nowadays stories have a budget between spectacle and storytelling.

They didn't have the technology so used what they did have. Now it seems to be all about special affects.

They had better writers that did their research on of Scifi books that were plentiful and saw what the people wanted.

You got the odd weird once thanks to starwars rip off types but you also got gold.

People had more hope for the future then, not to mention all the great stories like The Princess on Mars and the time Machine.

Now it's just been watered down like 80s kid shows as the usual attention span has depleted and everything needs to be action and fast paced.

Doesn't help alot of the directors and producers were kids from that era and just want to make movies of their childhood favourites.
