As the world fades away I find myself in a forest trees grow into the clouds thick around as houses each one towers above branches entangled blotting out the sun above. Here I wander listening for her song sweet and high like a bird in flight it once flowed through these glades like a wind but now there is only silence and the eyes trained from all around. Here I light a fire its small, cold and sputters but it's all I can muster as the weight draws down from the dark canopies above. The fire flickers and nearly goes out sooner under each moon and vanishes some night when the moon hides under hidden clouds as I stand by the fire I look out at the shadows around fear grips me at each one until through the dim firelight I decipher twig branch and stone. my eyes feel heavy as I hear her song in the crackle of flame and see notes never once played. Looking up with a smile to see the muse for whom I've become beguiled, I see nothing but air across an empty pond that expands to the horizons and at me feet sits a reflection broken and on his knees beside an empty firepit.
