I spoke with my therapist yesterday after getting dumped again. She raised the possibility that my style of dating is based less in passion than in planning. That I hesitate to make a move because I'm too busy building a plan. And maybe that's why I so often fail. Because for me, dating is about showing up and being present. I withhold physical affection until we discuss it first. I allow for distance because becoming clingy burns me and the other person out. And perhaps my slow rare of change from date to lover is what does me in. Maybe I'm just a robot executing a task which can never be achieved.

I'm actually very reliant on rationality. I score high in personality traits for prudence. To an extent, I plan my actions and think about them quite often but never assume there is no consequence for your inaction because we lose a lot when we are no longer present and those are the moments that count to the people we neglect while we're busy contemplating. I'm driven more by logic and rational thinking than emotions and feelings. It's why I try to be practical, even though it comes across as being unacceptable by romantic standards. For example I don't ever plan to remarry, because the risks outweigh the benefits. There's a 50% chance that your relationship will fail. And divorce statistics are greater than 50% nowadays, so that's not very cost-effective and the risks outweigh the rewards and incentive to entangle myself in such things. But, should I ever go crazy enough to want to remarry, then I'm not going to do so unless my significant other signs a prenup. Why? Because it's the risk behind it. If she gets mad, then she can leave. But she's not the one who's going to suffer in the case of a nasty divorce. Court favor women, even if they're the ones who ruined the marriage. So I have to look at things from a practical point of view, and not allow myself to get caught up and feelings all for the sake of 'romance' or 'love.' Sure, being logical and practical is frowned upon because it goes against the fairytale Hallmark concept of love, and yes I have trust / attachment issues, but I don't put myself in the situations that could end horribly. And most of the people we date are VERY temporary and likely won't be around beyond a year at most. Very few are marriage material or worthy of being long-term companions. So, knowing that, I'm also hesitant to become too invested, whether emotionally, financially, or whatever. I got to know that someone is going to match my efforts and see things from a logical point of view, rather than just getting all caught up in their feelings and flying by the seat of their pants.
