So many possible answers. Materialistic explanations don't cut it - so what if a belligerent wants land? The real question is why they care at all. This is where we start delving into International Relations theories, but I tend to find these inadequate as well. They posit models of how the international system works (many of them inadequate or just wrong), but they either don't explain why, or boil it down to "states acting (instrumentally) rationally" (which is, in my opinion, too simplistic). So, IR theories get us closer to a root cause, but the reasons given are devoid of epistemic content (which is what we actually want). My personal belief is that the root causes of war stem from the concept of Recognition and how it does or doesn't align with the Identities of the belligerents. I particularly like reading a guy named Thomas Lindemann on this stuff, and he gives a few Recognition-based causes of War. To summarise: 1. War for Prestige A belligerent with a 'hubristic identity' attacks another because they perceive themselves as superior to their foe. War occurs simply because one side wants to feel strong and powerful; as a way to gain recognition from others that it feels is in line with how it identifies. 2. War Facilitated by the Absence of Norms and Shared Identities (aka War by Antipathy) Basically, if we cannot connect emotionally with the 'other', and/or 'they' are seen as being fundamentally 'not like us', then war is more likely because there is less inhibition to go to war in the first place. Here, lack of recognition of the other's identity is the cause. 3. War for a State's 'Universal' Dignity If a state (or a non-state) actor thinks that it is being disrespected in some extraordinary way (e.g. its 'honour' is being offended, its basic international rights are being intruded upon, etc.), then this non-recognition will be more likely to induce it to war. 4. War for a State's 'Particular' Dignity Similar to the previous one, but is more internally focussed (e.g. on culture, domestic institutions, etc.). Again, if an outside power attacks this identity, then this non-recognition could be a source of war. I think there's more to War than just these 4 points, but as far as root causes go, an examination of the interplay between Recognition and Identity will take you a long way. (edited)
