So as the election season is in full swing it makes me think 🤔 can people be friends or date someone with different political views? Of course I know they can be, but I find that it causes a rift. I don't think it should! Sure, if you disagree on politics you may largely have different views on some important issues that may cause conflict, but having differences of opinions and being able to engage in civil discussions should be a welcomed thing and not a bad thing. It seems like people on both sides of politics are so strongly convicted in their beliefs they don't want to engage in a friendly discussion. People often resort to name calling and get so angry because they think they're right and don't want to hear other people's opinions. If two people are passionate about politics should this affect their personal relationships? Should they be able to look past that and still be with each other? Please keep responses classy this isn't about who you'd like to win in this coming up election! (edited)

I'm not an American, but the way the two political elite parties (Democratic and Republicans) have sewn divisions amongst Americans for decades to see each other as enemies and have this "us vs them" mentality, so that they can keep working class Americans of every race, creed and gender from realizing that they have more in common in their daily lives and struggles and coming together as one people, seems like a idealistic utopian dream. Don't get me wrong; I think it is possible, but the way ideologies and identitarian politics have been distorted, it almost seems like they have become the new religious beliefs and views and have seen the other side as an other or demagogue. My politics and worldview are left-leaning, and I'm pretty intuitive in telling apart a right-winger, conservative, centralist neoconservative, a liberal and a leftist. You would think I'd have a harder time engaging with those on the right, but I don't because I don't take them too seriously and can subvert their worldview to a point where they start questioning some things. It's those that are in the center I have a harder time engaging with because they tend to be the people who think that they are doing good, when actually they are making things worse for everyone (Democratic party). And they can shift to the left or right (but usually shift to the right) when it's convenient for them. I have engaged with a Trump supporter here and he could understand the things I was talking about and agreed with them, but took 10 steps back in his conclusion. I'm not someone who is going to try to convert or bring them to the other side. I just state my truth. It's their choice if they choose to accept it and do the hard work of change thier worldview or choose thier comfort 🤷🏽‍♀️. Where I'm from, politics are more nuanced than those in America as there is no left vs right and we have many parties that can sometimes have both left and right conservative policies. I don't know if I'd engage with someone who's politics are on the right, but if they are not only willing to engage with people from the other side, but just see people as human beings worthy of having the same rights that they have, then I guess I could 🤷🏽‍♀️. Most conservative people here just want be left alone and form separatist communities, independent of the government, so I don't get to engage with a lot of conservative people on a daily basis. Like I said, we don't wear our politics on our sleeve or as it's a religion like Americans do 🤷🏽‍♀️. Also, people need to get off their phones for a change and "go touch some grass". Meet different people for once. This keyboard political warrior culture isn't doing anyone any favors and makes people hate each other more. Being political online isn't actually practicing or doing politics 😅😂. (edited)

This is simply my opinion and observation, and I can't claim it to be universally true. I believe that a diversity of interests or beliefs can often be beneficial for a relationship. However, when it comes to fundamental topics such as religion, politics, finances, life goals, and core values, having starkly opposing views can create significant challenges. While some differences can enhance a relationship, deep divisions in what I would consider "core values" can lead to problems. In these cases, the relationship may end up revolving around avoidance and disengagement rather than fostering a genuine partnership. When individuals focus on evading difficult discussions instead of connecting over shared values, it detracts from the potential for mutual understanding and support. I acknowledge that I sometimes struggle to express my thoughts clearly, but I hope this makes sense.
