It`s the very first time I translate the story I wrote, so give it a try maybe? Falling in love with every single place if you only properly tell me your stories about it. Look at me, I`m the daughter of italian immigrants, Brooklyn 1940`s, victory rolls and a dress - very simple and plain, it`s skirt goes brighter from the waist on - carefully ironed; I`m barely eighteen by the time the war beginns (the winter before was so cold, tuberculosis took away the boy from downstairs and his poor mother was howling nights all the week long until she passed either). My dance partner has blue eyes and the world`s most dazzling smile, with his cap shifted to the side and Marlboro smokes in the pocket (for ladies of course). Hero wearing the uniform, leading in the dance, laughing while talking about his irish family, he gives me the fire walking me under the streetlights and while we flirt lightly at my door. And we kiss. Surely we do: his hand on my waist is warm and certain, some strands of his slicked back hair fell on the forehead and it`s ticklish, but, oh, how hard it is stop! Our Sacred Virgin Mary, bless America and keep it safe and also keep safe that blue eyed soldier fighting for this country and for Brooklyn he`s supposed to come back to: docks, Giovanni`s store on the street corner, Saint Peter`s Cathedral (since we`re getting married in there). Bless clotheslines from building to building and the smell of watery soap steam on a washday, and the cat, which turns over the trashcans behind the cinema, and bless East River and the Brooklyn Bridge because we`re going to visit Manhattan one day, and Empire State Building and, please, barefoot toddlers of Mrs. Averett keep safe too. I run away from my work to the train station to give him my Bible and the small photo card of me to which he says "Oh Mary, don`t you cry," and wipes tears from my cheeks with his scratchy hands, the same palms all the boys working either on manufactories or in docks, or on the constructions have. The plattform is full of ones of my kind - those who`s crying. I keep his letters in my handkerchief under the pillow till the very end of the war, read thousands times, memorized to the last comma and to the smallest mistake - he never graduated from school. I run to meet him wearing the same old dress, with lines drawn on my legs (we`re getting married on that day, the only beautiful dress I own and his uniform - how little is necessary for real happiness: just me, him and Brooklyn).
