Synopsis reads: [...] a life-threatening struggle of love, jealousy, murder and revenge between powerful natural and supernatural characters set in ancient Igloolik [...] The picture below speaks volumes: The protagonist running for his life, buck naked, in this harsh environment, makes such a stark contrast and powerful impression. He's literally "stripped" of everything and fighting against all odds, with nothing to help him but his speed, stamina and persistence. Mel Gibson's 'Apocalypto' from 2006 had an adrenalin-fused and captivating escape scene on foot. That one becomes pale, however, compared to the chase in Atanarjuat. The photography is so beautiful, and so are the people. That is, genuin Inuits from Igloolik (with little or none acting experience), way up northeast in Canada, not too far from Greenland. The film is actually renowned for it's production, being the first feature film ever to be written, directed and acted entirely in the Inuktitut language. Also, the crew was 90 percent Inuits. The production itself is impressive, filming in such cold and desolate environment. The film won the Caméra d'Or at Cannes in 2001, and have won several other awards.
