Google translate before the conversation, try to pronounce it. They will correct you. Next day say it again, they feel happy. Third day, google translate the continuation of the conversation, try to pronounce it, they will correct you. Next day say it again, they feel happy again. I am learning german, dutch, polish and icelandic this way. (edited)

Good question. Easy for me to learn Latin or Cyrillic based alphabet language from an app. But it's very hard to learn language like Chinese from any mobile app, because pronunciation often doesn't match the sound how latinized (romanized) words of chinese sounds. A very simple example of it: 的 sounds like "Da", but it's written as "De". In latinized Japanese there are fewer mistakes like "私は教師で" which's latinized version is "Watashi wa kyo'oshidesu", actually sounds like "Watashi wa Kyooshides" and not "desu"

Duolingo is the way to go. I'm teaching myself Spanish at the moment. It's easy, intuitive and stays on top of you about practicing. Most lessons can be completed in matter of minutes While the app is great, I would also suggest start watching TV programs in the selected language to help expedite your learning. I can speak Chinese (learnt through books ) and that was hard Doulingo makes it easy.

Get down the very rudimental basics and then lots of practice with native speakers is probably the best way! One very good thing to do is to take a list of the 1000 most used words in a language and learn their meaning and use in sentences. The more optimal way to do this is create flash cards that you can use to train over and over again, but it's a bit grindy. Good luck on you language adventures!

Hey Luna. I have tried DuoLingo. It has its pros and cons. I have tried Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. For Korean, learning the written language was fairly easy (for me). While speaking, I had a hard time trying to understand the Formal and informal speech. For Chinese and Japanese, I enjoy speaking it on there. Writing the kanji/calligraphy is difficult. Like some others have said, don’t just rely on Duo to learn, try some other programs. I am in the process of looking for a new app/software while still twiddling around with Duo. Hope that helps.

Immersion. I've been 'nomadic' a while, so I pick up basics in whatever language my host country speaks. I've only deep dived on a couple, one of which I studied in school for many years, the other just because I lived around the language so much, it was part by hearing it all the time, part out of necessity and using Translate a ton.

Mopeds in Vietnam
Just found out one of the slang terms for mopeds in Vietnam is "xe ôm" which literally means (hug car) because you hug the driver as you ride and i just find that so adorable.
