Indian Diaspora Films

I have been watching quite a lot of films made in and around the Indian Indentured Diaspora on YouTube, that showcase a lot of the 'either side' of the Great Indian Diaspora that's the NRI lot. This lot consists of the descendants of the Indians who were brought by the British, French and Dutch as indentured labourers to different Caribbean, Indian Ocean and Pacific countries between the early 19th and 20th centuries. While many like V.S. Naipaul or even Shivnarine Chanderpaul have made it famous globally, there, remains a section which still struggles to make ends meet either financially or residentially despite being well-established. 'Pump Up The Mandali' (Fiji), 'Brown Sugar Too Bitter For Me' (Guyana), 'Doubles With Slight Pepper' and 'Bacchanal Time' (Trinidad), which are all available on YouTube, brilliantly amalgamates Indian elements with local cultures of those particular areas. Despite the blunders in execution, the stories are rooted and brilliant and the music explains a lot about influences. 'Coolie: Pink And Green', which is freely available on the website of Culture Unplugged compactly tells the story of Indian Indentured Labourers at the Caribbean through the creative take on their descendants through visuals, music and voiceovers strictly. 'Coolie: How Britain Reinvented Slavery' (YouTube) is a collective effort by the BBC from a partly colonialists view where without showing much of the Indian context, only three countries from the indentured-based regions have been described in a subtle manner where Gandhi is shown as a hero and the remaining freedom fighters who worked along with him are removed from the bigger picture. What is more interesting is that the documentary 'Once More Removed' (on YouTube), which follows its filmmaker's journey to Guyana and then to India, has a family which is similar to that of 'Mississippi Masala' which focuses on an Indian origin family that shifts to the USA from Uganda. 'The Last Kantraki' (YouTube) focuses on a similar 'double displacement' story of a female indentured labourer from India to Suriname and then the Netherlands, where she stayed with her great-grandchildren. These stories show a greater perspective about the Indian diaspora, also proving that we are the largest dispersed community in the world. #cinema #filmmaking #youtube #westindies #caribbean #fijiblue #indian #india (edited)
