Love & Hate by Michael Kiwanuka

This song is just oozing with soul. It’s premise is as complex or as simple as you make it really. But, what I’ve gained from it is, love and hate are 2 sides of the same coin, I believe it takes just as much energy to hate someone as it is to love them. Things get messy quickly when the 2 start mixing together. That’s when long lasting and traumatizing pain start to settle in. That’s where you don’t know if you should hate someone for the pain they’ve caused or love them for the joy they brought. Then, the bridge of the song tells an entirely different tale. It introduces the idea of desperate attempts to be seen, heard, understood, and most importantly, loved. With lyrics saying “for the love of everybody, I did something wrong”. Peer pressure; that feeling of a dozen voices of supposed “friends” suggesting you do something dangerous to prove your worth, it’s the beginning of the many dark tales of addictions and emotional scars. At the end of each verse Michael says “you can’t take me down” expressing that, even after the shame and pain of his mistakes he has simply not given up. We’re not defined by our pain, our mistakes, or our failures. We’re a product of what we do after the chaos of life has taken it’s course. I could say more but, I’ll stop 😅.
