David by Michelangelo

Question

Before Michelangelo set to work on it, the block of marble that became David was rejected by two previous artists, Agostino di Duccio and Antonio Rossellino, both had a go and decided it was too difficult to work with. It waited 42 years for someone special willing to take the job...

In 1501 the marble - defined as "male abbozatum et sculptum" - arrived in the hands of a twenty-five year old Michelangelo who, despite these difficult premises, was not discouraged. Within three years, and at the age of 29, Michelangelo completed what would become one of the most famous artworks of all time, David, a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture that stands 16 ft and 17cm (5.17 m) tall, weighs 12,478 lbs (5,660 kg), and carved from a single block of Carrara marble.

The sculpture was created between 1501 and 1504 in a time of massive political change, David became a symbol of the Florentine Republic’s strength. Much like David facing Goliath, the Republic was threatened by stronger states on all sides, not to mention the Medici Family regaining power. When David was placed outside the city government buildings in the Piazza della Signoria this connection solidified itself in the public’s mind.

The story of David and Goliath is a biblical one, found in Book 1 Samuel. The teenage David had to defeat the giant Goliath, he could not be defeated by strength since David was smaller. It took cunning and skill to defeat someone bigger than him, and he did so with the slingshot.

Today, it is located at the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence and is visited by more than 8 million people annually.

The slingshot is one of mankind's oldest weapons, which it would be used exclusively as a hunting weapon. i can assure you, Michelangelo understood exactly what he was doing when he was sculpting the hand of David (he focused on giving a tribute to the constant practice of exercise/hunting on the developed muscles of the hand).

The Renaissance is my favorite Era of artwork! I did not know these facts about David. Italy has been on my list of places to visit since I was knee high to a grasshopper. I want to see all the artwork there, and one day I will go to Italy.
