As a player all you need to know is your character. Specifically try and understand the mechanics of the class you are playing and your skills. Everything else the DM will instruct you on what to do when. From there you can just focus on role playing and having a good time.

Get a group of friends that are also getting into it, have someone with a bit of experience be the game master, and have a blast ^^ There's a ton of info online, and if you use apps like roll20 or dndbeyond you can get some assistance during character creation 😁

Remember to have a gamelan and read up on what each type of class/race does. A good gm or group will be patient and help you through it

I might be a bit late to the post, but I have been running various systems for a few years now: If you are wondering how to really just *play*, just work on mechanics first, then as you guys get used to making actions, start adding narrative accents until it just comes more naturally. If you are running games, don't be afraid to be kinda chill. We aren't all being paid to perform for a crowd, we are all just (usually) trying to enjoy a game with some buds. For actually getting into tabletop rpg games: D&D5e is kinda expensive to get into but a good starter point. Pathfinder 1e and 2e can find free sources online to refer to, and 2e is similar enough to 5e for me to recommend to newer players. If you wanna passively learn the 5e system, Critical Role and The Adventure Zone are decent podcasts. For Pathfinder 2e, try Narrative Declaration's Rotgrind. I currently run a system called Icon, which is from the creators of Lancer (Mech Based tabletop system) and the Kill Six Billion Demons author. It's very simple and I prefer it to the other systems so far. This isn't to say stick with these, I advocate variety, but just good starting points.
