The Otherworldly Aspect of Sound Design (And My Inspiration)

Back then, certain instruments can only produce certain pitch, timbre, and tone. It only now differs on how complicated it is played, and what instrument it is accompanied with. Electronic music showed up and now there are synths; odd artificial sounds that create a specific sound depending on how their waves look, whether it is sine, square, or triangle. This basis served as a foundation for endless imagination of soundscapes, ranging from dark and mysterious, to light and fluffy ear candies. Especially that VSTs are improving day by day. One can think what happens to the future of Electronic Dance Music. As an artist, how do we take advantage of the fantasticn manipulation of a wave into something never heard of before? First things first, we are not here to discuss the technicalities and the workarounds of sound designing, but rather examining the aspects of it that makes it worth pursuing. While it is fine that producers use sample, pre-existing sounds that are a click away from the library, and presets, how about trying something else, like creating your own sound from scratch? How fascinating would the songs be if some sounds if not all, are incorporated into the producer's creation. Akin to saying the producer's name in the song, sound designing is a trademark in itself without the usage of words. The moment someone hears the producer's songs, they would instantly recognize it and say "oh it's his/her music". Sound designing indeed is a double-edged sword. While it is a beautiful and enjoyable process in which one seeks their unique sound, without the balance of familiarity, it will deem boring to the listener. It is like related to a cat that vomits when given a completely new food, it upsets their stomach. The solution here being that incorporating it slowly and surely will prevent the cat, or in this case the listeners, from vomiting or rejecting it outright. It has been challenge across EDM producers especially, to experiment but at the same time create a coherent creation that is considered listenable but still uses their unique sound designs. The best example of such producer is Au5. Titled "The Bass Wizard", he was able to create futuristic soundscapes without risking the integrity of the songs. He also teaches his ways and process of creating his own sound designs. In my experience, sound designing has caused mixed feelings in my music. It still holds onto a familiar vibe, but its sound feels otherworldly. What's better is that people will visualize a different place in their minds, letting their imaginations be aroused by a strangely new sound that hasn't been heard yet. After all, people are fascinated by the strange, unknown things. Thanks to sound design, many producers started standing out, not only helping out with their career, but finding their own voice in the chaos of noises. Someday, we will hear more sounds that are out of this world, as a result of hundred hours of experimenting. Barriers will be broken, and new music will be born. In my opinion, things are just about to get exciting. How do you look forward to new eras, reader?

What’s your favourite technique to use when producing music?

What techniques do you prefer to use and how do you implement them to your works? Anything from sound design to what you do when mastering/producing (whether you master your own works, or before sending it off to a mastering engineer!)

Another Learning Project

Sorry, no project video :( - So basically... I have no idea how I did this. I did a bunch of new things I've never done before in my sound design and in my mixing, but I really hope I can reproduce this workflow at some point as It's a huge improvement for me! As always, all synths are manually... read more

One of my favorite genres. The artwork got jacked cause I use a vid compression app to make full vids tiny in size but this is my variation of the genre.

Took a little break from moving last night to play with a new toy I received for making chiptune music. Just playing around with my first patch, discovering a little bit of this things capabilities.

Which do you prefer more

Serum or Vital? I'm not asking about Omnisphere or anything but keep. Just Serum vs Vital. I will always say Serum all day every day but I find Vital a little more user friendly for sound design. but it still isn't.Serum. which thankfully I haven't had to use massive for years.
