I go to work, and I always hate it. So I ask myself, “Why do I keep coming to work?” And I reply to myself, “Because I want money.” So I ask myself, “Why do I want money?” And I reply to myself, “Because I want food.” So I ask myself, “Why do I want food?” And I reply to myself, “Because I want to live.” So I ask myself, “Why do I want to live?”

I asked myself this question a few weeks ago, my answer was that I’m too tired to live. I don’t want to live and experience all this pain and suffering and heartbreak. I live because I owe it to the people who’ve been cheering me on this whole time to fight on regardless, to never give up. And thus, I continue to live and struggle and will keep doing so until death arrives at my door.

This. I took a gap year after high school just to ask myself two questions: (1) Who am I? and (2) What do I want to do on this pale blue dot? It took me an entire year just to somewhat satisfactorily answer both questions. The answer to my first question isn't relevant to this discussion, so I'll skip it and go for the second question. My answer to the second question is that there is no inherent meaning in life: We evolved not to be happy, but to survive. The purpose of life is merely self and communal preservation: There is no meaning. So what now? That's where the fun part begins. Since we have no assigned meaning, this means we are free to create one for ourselves. I urge you to take the time to contemplate as I had and find out what gives you meaning in life. Because meaning comes from within. But when the ancients say, "Meaning comes from within," what does that even mean? It means that meaning is borne out of our intrinsic values, virtues, and duties (not influenced by external pressures. So again, I urge you to take time and listen to your inner voice: Who are you and why do you want to live?
