People say they are honest if they don't lie.
But honesty is as much about what you DON'T say, as what you do. The words you hide behind versus the words you use. There is an old joke about the English and the Americans being separated by a common language, but the same is true for every one out there, regardless of language. It's hard to say what we think and feel.. so many masks we are expected to wear for this group or that, between friends, family and the "outside world"... Social taboos and expectations. So many people are lying so much of the time because that is what is EXPECTED of you to fit into 'polite society'. Honesty does not need to be crass, harsh, or cruel but we're so used to protecting everyone's feelings that we lost touch with our own. Say what you mean. Mean what you say. Live like you mean it. Sin like you mean it. If the things you feel are a shame to you, ask where that shame is coming from and face it. Get therapy, get support, but never lie to yourself and never be dishonest with others.
