Depending on how rural you are. There are other modes of transportation that can work in the meantime as well. Like biking, scooter, moped.

@Sunnie Oh, well if you start in baby steps, and it is flat. You can start walking greater and greater distances. Visiting family in Chicago sometimes we get off the L and walk for a few miles.
