Struggles and addictions

I have a question and would love to receive as many responses as possible to gain different perspectives. I am a very confident person who loves to push my mental limits. I have had a somewhat difficult past and still deal with many struggles. However, I strive to maintain a positive mental state and not let circumstances control my actions. I don't understand why some people who have a lot of help and are actually improving their lives still act like they are struggling. A prime example is someone I helped by getting them a job and taking care of their bills. They are making progress, but instead of being positive and focusing on the next steps, such as gaining custody of their children whom they love very much, they spend their last dime on beer. Sorry for this novel. Just trying to solve this puzzle why it's so easy for me to push myself to be better but not others

Without knowing more my guess would be self-medicating for anxiety or depression. If it’s addiction willpower really isn’t at play here—suggest watching Pleasure Unwoven by Dr. Kevin McCauley. Very good on the neuroscience of addiction. You’ll want to keep two things in mind, to what extent are you enabling, and how much of this is ‘white knight’ syndrome for yourself. What’s your happiness/stability baseline like? When I started reading I assumed you were going to be asking for yourself. Are you practicing DBT skills or something like it, or are you self-taught? You are answering/presenting your opinion in a binary way, assuming there's no other way. You don't have to push or dwell. You can understand, learn, and move on, no pushing or dwelling needed. I don't need anything to keep going. Life is all around you, none of it needs psychological motivation to keep going. We do because we have things that make us feel stuck, meaningless, worthless, so we try to get away from that by inventing these things, rather than going to the depths of the feelings in the first place and answering them directly. I never said you're beating anyone down. I don't believe you are. But what you said are not facts at all. And I hope I've explained the reasons for that well.
