Always test in production (kidding). I'm still a beginner, but one thing I learned in school was to test and debug often. It makes finding mistakes and things that aren't working much easier. Stepping through your code a line at a time and making sure every line does what it's supposed to instead of just letting it run until it errors out is a big help in troubleshooting.
