How is Germany treating me?
Moving to Germany for my master's has been an eye-opening experience, but it's been nothing like I expected. I purposely avoided extensive research beforehand to immerse myself fully in the experience without any preconceptions, and boy, was I in for a surprise. First and foremost, the language barrier has been a significant challenge. It's true what they say: if you don't speak German, navigating daily life can be quite tricky. Finding someone willing to help or even have a conversation in English is very rare. And don't even get me started on the early closures! I'm still getting used to the fact that everything shuts down after 8 p.m. It's frustrating when you need to buy something urgently, only to realize that all the stores have already closed. Then there's the supposed German punctuality, which, in my experience, hasn't quite lived up to its reputation. I've lost count of how many times I've been late for appointments because the trains are delayed or canceled... As for making friends, well, let's just say it's been a bit of a struggle. While I'm usually quite adept at striking up conversations and forming connections, the Germans' reserved nature has proven to be a tough nut to crack. Small talk feels like pulling teeth, and making meaningful connections seems like an uphill battle. Still going strong... lets see how long I can make it here 😅

If you can't find someone in Germany who can speak English then they don't like you. They all speak English it's taught as a second language... I have family there in Passau and friends in Bremen and cologne. So I'm not sure what you did to upset everyone but they all know what you are saying... auf wiedersehen
