Fossil of the Day #8 - Homalocephale

We’re heading to Mongolia around about 70 million years ago for today’s fossil, Homalocephale! This little guy was a 6 feet long, 1.5 foot tall pachycephalosaur that lived in the Gobi Desert during the late Cretaceous. Unlike its more well known and much larger cousin, Pachycephalosaurus, it had a flat, smooth skull, as opposed to the dome-shaped and spiky head of its North American relative. Homalocephale would’ve lived alongside a huge variety of animals, as the Gobi Desert at this time was rich in water and plant life, which supported crocodillians, fish, turtles, and of course, other dinosaurs. Armored ankylosaurs like Tarchia and Saichania, huge hadrosaurs like Barsboldia and Saurolophus, gigantic titanosaurs such as Nemegtosaurs and Opisthocoelicaudia, and of course, the Asiatic tyrant Tarbosaurus (aka T. Rex’s closest cousin). All of these and more lived alongside little Homalocephale, which would’ve minded its own business as much as it could, likely feeding on soft fruits and leaves, though it could’ve also snacked on insects and other small invertebrates, as no teeth have ever been found from this animal, though pachycephalosaus in general are hard to pin down in terms of diet with how weird their teeth are. While headbutting is a common explanation for why Homalocephale and its family had such armored skulls, it is still unknown if all species did so, including today’s fossil. Pachycephalosaurus is believed to have done so, as several individual skull have been found with evidence of osteomyelitis on their head domes. Osteomyelitis is an infection in the bone caused by either a wound that reaches the bone or a wound to the tissue around the skull that lead to the infection. One animal was found with 23 separate lesions alone! However, flat-headed pachycephalosaurs, including our Homalocephale, lack these lesions, so either they weren’t hitting each other as hard, or they weren’t doing it at all. There is a third option, which lies in their hips. Their pelvis was broader than to be expected, which could mean that Homacephale engaged in flank-butting, where instead of jousting headon with one another like dueling knights, they would hit each other broadside, which given their flattened skulls and hips that couldn’t lie (Shakira Shakira) seems certainly possible. That’s our Fossil of the Day! Check in tomorrow for the controversial and bizarre Nectocaris!

Homalocephale wants to know if you have any treats for it. From the Dinosaur Store at Space Coast, Florida
