Managing people's injustice
Ancient Greek philosopher Socrates was married to a woman named Xanthippe , who is described by Antisthenes : "The hardest to get along with of all the women there are," which, according to Xenophon's symposium won the approval of her husband Socrates himself. Several accounts say that Socrates wife, Xanthippe, would empty over his head a chamber pot consisting remains of cold water. From the Book A Cabinet of Greek Curiosites reads: "On one occasion, Xanthippe shouted abuse at him from an upper window and soaked him with the contents of a chamber pot. But he merely wiped his head dry and said, 'I knew we were in for a shower after such a loud thunderstorm.'" And this was attributed to St Jerome An additional incident regarding Xanthippe also mentioned in the same book "Alcibiades sent Socrates a large and beautifully prepared cake. Xanthippe, Socrates's wife, was very annoyed, regarding the cake as a provocative gift from a beloved to his lover, so she threw it out the basket it came in and trampled on it. Socrates laughed and said, 'Then you won't be getting a piece of it either.'" When Alcibiades, an athenian whose occupation was a statesman, orator and general, stated: “The abusive temper of Xanthippe is intolerable;” Socrates responded: “But I am used to it, just as I should be if I were always hearing the noise of a pulley; and you yourself endure to hear geese cackling." To which Alcibiades answered: “Yes, but they bring me eggs and goslings.” “Well, and Xanthippe brings me children," Concluded Socrates Socrates nevertheless has purposely chosen to be with a person with such a character, describing: "It is the example of the rider who wishes to become an expert horseman: 'None of your soft-mouthed, docile animals for me,' he says; 'the horse for me to own must show some spirit.' In the belief, no doubt, if he can manage such an animal, it will be easy enough to deal with every other horse besides. And that is just my case. I wish to deal with human beings, to associate with man in general; hence my choice of wife. I know full well, if I can tolerate her spirit, I can with ease attach myself to every human being else." We can apply this story to our lives to help us better manage other people's injustice and unwanted personality. Socrates made a splendid and (hopefully) agreeable reply when explaining his reasons for choosing and staying with such a wife. Although he lived over 2 thousand years ago - and therefore it cannot be certain just how Socrates actually treated and responded to his wife, typically in the absence of others -we can assume that these accounts are accurate. In any case, these accounts may serve as a lesson to us, for even certain fictional stories serve to teach us critical principles in the real world. These accounts should move us to think that instead of complaining and getting angry towards those who wrong us, we can choose rather to calmly endure other their mistakes and faults - understanding it - as Socrates did, that it can amount to strength inasmuch as it increases tolerance of other individuals wherefore benefiting our self-control and in general our Virtue. It should also help develop further qualities such as acceptance, patience and forgiveness. If we can become accustomed to certain behaviors and come to understand that it as a normal part of life we cannot control, that other peoples temper and poor choices are temporary and in most cases are no massive threat to us (or else we should see to it that we avoid such people or seek aid) we shall see just how pointless and inappropriate getting worked up about such minor things are! Indeed, it's far better to simply accept how others are rather than complain and cause unnecessary stress unto ourselves. After all, since when has this helped? As Socrates was saying, if he can tolerate his wife's silly, unjust character he may therefore be able to handle the character of anybody else. He knew well (or so it seems) that what one does, says and thinks are outside our control, and our only control lies in how we respond. The choice is always our own: we can either help a situation or make it worse, just as we can either help ourselves in any given circumstance or else only make it harder on ourselves.

I DON'T GET IT
Out of all the existential philosophies that people are choosing today, why is nihilism one of the most popular? I need someone who subscribes to that school of though to discuss it with me. #nietzsche #nihilism #philosophy #discuss

Why is everyone whining about college?
You don't have to go and the fewer people that do will force them to correct the issue to get more students. There are plenty of things you can learn by yourself or else where.

Super imposition or duality
I've always been interested in the assumption that things are diametrically opposed. Science versus religion for example; "Does the belief in one negate the belief in the other?" I recently had a course where I argue that the two can be superimposed making a scientist that is inherently... (edited) read more

The Ancient Greeks had a maxim: "Know Thyself" My interpretation: Know your character, be aware of your limitations, know your duties. Know your nature as a human being. When I saw the daily question today of "do you feel like you live your life authentically?"
I thought to myself 'that's a kinda of shallow question which could be expanded on a bit further". So I'd like to offer a counter question to the philosophy peoples. How could you determine if you are living your life authentically? (Fig. 1 bottom) me having a philosophy crisis at work

You should never regret anything in life. If it’s good, it’s wonderful. If it’s bad, it is experience. जीवन में कभी भी किसी बात का पछतावा नहीं करना चाहिए। अगर यह अच्छा है, तो बढ़िया है। अगर यह बुरा है, तो यह अनुभव है। Gud day

Rolling with punches
When we acknowledge the punches are coming and forgive ourselves that we can’t stop them all, we are happier. When we overreach and go against the flow of life, we suffer.
