Everybody has a different system that works for them. You can start by writing down the outline of your story, or you can write down the ideas that pop out randomly. But for me, the most important thing is you need to write it down on paper so it won't be just a flitting thought that comes and goes. And if you are really serious about writing. Make a regular schedule and follow it.

Literally with any thing as a writer for many years its dose not matter as long as you write. You get better with time the longer you waste asking how with out just doing it. Is time wasting honeing your skills. Start with journals, short stories, poetry, any thing will do. Also down be hard on your self like any thing its trial error and studies. I also read alot to understand different ways of writing I have also looked up different web searches on different tips and stuff. There are also free apps to two load that can help you character build and will randomly give different ideas to write about for practice. Hope this all helps best of luck and if you have any questions just ask. Just do your self a favor and start right away a page a day is an awsome start.

Hey Chris - I saw this when you first posted and have been thinking it over. At first I was gonna give you my "writer's" answer, but instead I'm gonna give you a better one. 😉 I'm also a fan of neuroscience, which I think is more helpful. I used to think of my writing as the product. But the more I learn about how the brain processes information, the more I see writing as part of the journey. I KNEW that when I sat down (and actually gave in) to freewriting and just letting the thoughts come, I noticed that I'd end up "knowing" more than I did when I first set out. Long story short - the brain utilizes our free thinking time...also called 'cognitive rest' to make connections that we hadn't seen before. Example - On the drive home from a meeting when I my #*% car stereo wasn't working, I'd find myself thinking about how things played out and I'd have these huge aha moments where I saw connections I hadn't seen before. The brain loves this downtime of unstructured thinking. Likewise, when I gave myself time to "freewrite" on a topic I knew I wanted to explore, I would end up having the same aha moments - connecting dots in ways that I couldn't believe I hadn't previously connected. It sounds like you have dots to connect. Instead of demanding a product right now, how about you spend time just typing with no rules, no expectations? I would bet $100 that you come away with a few ahas of your own. Let THAT be the goal for now!!
