I personally have been using dating apps almost 10 years. Honestly I don't know any other way to meet people than dating apps, cause I get so nervous to just talk to strangers in bars. I think they definitely help introverts like me. But like the Rick abd Morty episode about dating apps, maybe dating apps made things too easy. Since people have the opportunity to meet the perfect person, they might not want to commit to one person..?

I think dating apps definitely cause FOMO (fear of missing out). I don't have a lot of success on most dating apps but there was one in particular that I got a lot of attention on, similar to how I hear from a lot of women they get a lot of matches and messages on dating apps (on average. statistics from app companies seem to agree with this). When I was in that position my standards went up and it was hard to juggle so many people, and looking back I ended up not committing enough time to any one person to make a genuine connection. They require nurturing. It's impossible when you're talking to multiple people. Additionally, if you go on a date or start talking to someone and there's one or two things that aren't perfect, why compromise when the next "perfect" person could just be a swipe away? I think that's the mentality dating apps give. Once you realize this you can change your own behavior to nurture a serious connection with someone. Then factor in that there are not many women percentage-wise that use apps, compared to men, and you get a pretty big gender imbalance which makes it hard for men to match, and women (not always, just on average) get a lot more matches. So then guys start to think they're ugly as sin but that's not the reason they aren't matching. Also I think dating apps tend to cater more toward male attraction than female. Both genders care about physical attraction of course, and both care about emotional attraction, but I think biologically women's attraction is easier formed in person. The things that go into it like gestures, personality, sense of humor, voice, body language, etc. that can't be conveyed well through apps. Lastly, to your point, it's hard to go up to someone you find attractive and talk to them in person. I get that. Everyone has to deal with rejection, guys in particular since they're expected to approach. Don't take it personally. I think people tend to retreat to dating apps because it "seems" easier, but most guys I know have better luck in person. Once you do it a few times and don't take the rejection personally, it's not that bad. I already wrote too much so I'll stop there but I could write a documentary on this topic. I find it really interesting and I have a lot of theories, some backed up by data and psychology research. I just like thinking about this type of stuff.

I actually feel like it's the opposite. But honestly I just think people like me when I'm far away lol. I never had an in-person relationship and it's been so long since my last relationship because I thought I was going to marry her. It's taking me a long time to try and at least even put myself out there. But I feel like no one wants to talk anymore. And you always have to go through so many paywalls in order to even see if people like you or not. I don't really mind not being in a relationship but I do miss the company. But I just feel like people don't know how to communicate and so for me in my experience it's been really difficult since my last relationship like 6 years ago

And if we are uncomfortable to talk with someone privately, either in app or in person, I don't think it creates much difference -perspective of a newbie in dating apps 😅 btw, I am more comfortable talking with strangers about random things because I know it doesn't really matter for them and they will eventually forget 😆

I think you definitely have a valid theory here. Definitely helps you to be more pickier probably rather than giving imperfect people a chance. At the same time, it does eliminate some questions you may have immediately since a lot is already in our profiles. For example as an older person, it can be hard to even know who is in my age group. I could get hit on by a 20 yr old that looks 29. So that's nice. And I do know people who have legit found their other halves on a dating app. So it isn't impossible. But I definitely think we as a whole are missing out on the trial of organic imperfection. But, someone reminded me there are plenty of organic moments & imperfections to explore after initially connecting on an app. I have had a couple of heavy connections over an app, that didn't pan out in person. Because in person chemistry can be so different & make or break. But even if you don't meet someone in an ideal way, other moments can be ideal. You wanted to meet someone in a coffee shop, but maybe you met them on an app & your first & most memorable date is in a coffee shop instead. Is that any less special?🤷🏾‍♀️
