"Unpacking emotions" How do I do that?

I'm in a terrible state at the moment, I'm distracted, confused, hurt, and just plain unhappy. I had a friend years ago who used to say they'd 'store the feelings for later unpacking'. I've tried storing my feelings, but I've not unpacked. Now I'm finding that sometimes I am very explosive and my mood can flip very quickly, which means that I've got to deal with repressed feelings before depression sets in. I'm guessing unpacking is akin to meditation but concentrating on the experiences which caused the feelings. Correct? Edit: Thank you all for your replies, yes Kevin you too mate. I've been introspective for the last few days and also wrote a few emails to the recycle bin, and it has helped a lot. (edited)

In my most honest opinion, and because I'm an expert at "storing" emotions, I think it's about going to the root of the problem. If you have packed those feelings as in keeping quiet and holding in those emotions, you could try to talk the next time you feel any small emotion inside of you. It helps vent out and let go of that "weight". I have been doing that lately so now I clearly know what the problem was. As shrek used to say "Better out than in" haha 😊

Meditation as self reflection, journaling helps with this. What happened, the feelings you have about it, why you feel that way, how you'd rather feel, how you think you can improve for emotional recognition for any future similarities, then you process all that. Hopefully a better understanding of yourself emerges.

I find that the things that need unpacking are brought up by triggers, the reasons behind the outbursts. I suggest having a journal to get down everything, kinda like transferring it out of your mind and IN to the journal. It helps me to think about why i switched so quickly to anger and use logic to follow the emotional thread, to the original issue(s) from the past that are still around. I think it's important to remember self care, things that are soothing fun and calming to incorporate in to your daily life consistently to help keep moods level as you feel sad, painful or angering things. i appreciate seeing stuff like this tbh. you don't have the answers yet, but you know how you want to experience your life. i used to handle my emotions this way, so i can at minimum tell you how i did it. i used to wait till the end of the day, i made it my bedtime routine to open up my journal and ask myself questions about myself, how i responded, and how my response made me feel. i would sometimes go back to older entries and go over and compare it all to the now. i found that when i was able to inform my future self, like a doctor, my own symptoms and choices, i was able to better solve what was making me, me. perhaps, i should take it back up again, now that i think on it, i was happier when i journalled...
