On reading in public. Is it just my area?
There was a recent opinion piece that was published locally on why many people from my country don't read anymore. I never read the article because my reality has always been different. I read. A lot. At home, outdoors, inside restaurants, at the mall, at the beach. And I'm a bit old-school. I like having physical books, and I'll always bring one with me wherever I go. The downside? People stare. My guess is that culturally, I stand out like a sore thumb here appearing content to just read a book. Today was no different. I was sitting relatively near the entrance of the restaurant, and almost every single person who passed me by lingered for a bit to see what I was reading. It was distracting. I was constantly seeing a lingering shadow over my shoulder. To make myself less conspicuous, I ended up trying to conceal the book under the table (which made it harder for me to turn the pages). I felt like a zoo animal. I caught a few who were staring and weren't even trying to hide it, maintaining strong eye contact with me 👁️👁️ It's like their eyes were saying, "What could you possibly be reading that would be so interesting to do it at a restaurant?" I would love it if more people did read in public. It's not easy to focus when there's all kinds of distractions, I know, but I think it would be cool to see more people doing it. Also, so I wouldn't be the only zoo animal anymore 😂💀 #books #reading

Oooof. Sticking out like a sore thumb when you want to sit quietly in peace and read. That's hard. I'm curious about the country, if you don't mind sharing? I've spent Ina few different countries (mostly western) and I can't say I've ever felt this. Mmm, though I can say there is a big difference between highly concentrated urban areas/smaller towns and cities when it comes to this. Or even different regions of a country. When I was in the United States, for instance, I noticed the Pacific Northwest (specifically Seattle and Portland) it was more or less commonplace to see people reading in public spaces. But I also spent time in other regions of the country where that wasn't true, even in urban settings.

I'm sure a lot more people are reading than they realize. I am regularly reading when I'm out...I just read on my phone. I think it's more a perception thing, since you don't need to carry the heavy physical books anymore, there's bound to be some curiosity as to what you're reading that prompted you to suffer the inconvenience of carrying another item just to read.

fellow bookreader, I relate with you on every level on this. My love for books? Let's say If money wasn't the constraint I would have own many my physical book favorites✨️ ya, I read a lot too, a lot on my phone always scrolling through one page after another or turning them, however mood goes😆 But I felt the same from time to time, apparently when I was reading something, people would look at me like what have I done?😂 I used to feel left out like they think I am different.. so I stopped reading, well I tried. Now, I just read whenever I am holed up in my room, own some paperback version too... you are braver to atleast pull the stunt of trying to read by under the bench, haha😂🥲 Sometimes I dream of 'don't judge' building a basement library under my house🙈😆 care to share what you're reading?

It's very strange to see the mix of cultures, for example, I'm Brazilian, I was born in South America (Latam) and even though I don't speak the same language as my neighbors, I identify a lot culturally speaking.

Keep seeing some users posting negatively about the opposite gender and yet expecting to, magically, be liked by someone from said gender. The delusion on these people baffles me. It's always assumptions about a whole gender, showing they have no real life experience.
