What are Your Thoughts on Collapse?

Collapse is the idea that we're not in the "beginning of the end" but slightly past the middle of the end. The theory is that we WILL run out of resources, face ecological collapse, and see more and more acts of mass violence and war in the coming years, and there's absolutely nothing anyone can do about it. There's no magic scientific invention that's going to save your children and elected leaders are worse than useless, they're actively the cause. So, what are thoughts on this? It's extreme, for sure. However as someone who grew up during the boom period for environmentalism and seeing that we're actually worse off than we were before it, I'm not that skeptical of the notion. Of course, collapse theories are diverse and vary wildly in their predictions.

I think you are on to something with this. A collapse is definitely coming (economy, culture, planet). I'm just trying to figure out if it is planned or is it happening because those we put in charge (and those we didn't) are really just stupid.

Socially, I haven't seen any evidence of an upcoming human collapse, but it would not surprise me if certain countries or parts of the world go through major upheavel. But that seems the norm of human history. We are currently experiencing a historically unprecedented period of peace right now. The last World War happened in the 1940s. Overall levels of violence in the world are dropping. I think part of why things feel so bad is we're becoming aware of bad things happening instead of being ignorant about it. Like we're actually seeing the front lines of war, and the true conditions of people who are being enslaved. If you mean like climate change, I think that will also cause major upheavel and is already causing huge amounts of suffering, which unfortunately mostly affects people who haven't done anything to contribute to climate change. But so far it doesn't seem like it's going to kill all humans.

I'd personally say that collapse (per the peak oil problems with our current transportation and energy structure) is very likely at this point, but not because we lack for solutions. There are a LOT of solutions, just no single "silver bullet" answer the way humans seem to prefer.... We have to use the grab bag. The reason I think collapse is quite likely is the lack of political will we see - politicians are useless because generally their constituents tell them the short term economy matters more. Not always in our petitions and whatnot, but in our daily behavior. Politicians aren't leaders, but followers. So until citizens act like we're willing to give us our convenience for the sake of the future, politicians will continue to give us the same present circumstances that keep them in office. I think we have to change before our legislation will. Not saying that's easy, but we can add up to a lot if we all stick together on it. (edited)
